Homicide Investigation Continues in Montgomery

Montgomery Police are conducting a homicide investigation.  Lt. Denise Barnes, a police spokeswoman, says an adult male was shot to death near the intersection of Rosa Parks Avenue and Fleming Road.  The fatal shooting happened Sunday evening.  Authorities have not released the deceased male's identify.  No arrests have been made.

A separate shooting occurred on Saturday at a residence off Wares Ferry Road.  Montgomery police said a suspect was taken into custody after two people were hit by gunfire in the 900 block of Rialto Drive.  One victim was critically injured, a second person was treated and released.

60th Anniversary Events

Montgomery will be in the spotlight this week with the 60th Anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott taking center stage.  Numerous events and observances are planned starting December 1st through next Monday, December 7th.  National Public Radio and WVAS-FM will co-sponsor a town hall conversation with some of the participants in the Bus Boycott.  The event starts at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dexter Avenue King Memorial Church will be the site.  Also, the life-size bronze sculpture of Rosa Parks has received a makeover according to Museum Director Felecia Bells.  The sculpture depicts Parks sitting on a bus seat, hands settled on a purse in her lap.

Officer Involved Shooting

The Alabama Bureau of Investigations is looking into an officer-involved shooting in Selma that left a man wounded.  Selma Police Chief John Brock said two officers were making a traffic stop Thursday night near downtown when they heard multiple gunshots.  The officers then saw a group of four to five men running from the area with guns.  Both officers pursued the suspects, one on foot and one by car.  During the chase, officers found an 18-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his leg.  Brock says it's unclear if the 18-year-old was one of the suspects shooting, or if he was caught in the crossfire.  No arrests have been made.

Fatal Prison Stabbing

An inmate was stabbed to death at the Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer.  The Department of Corrections said 35-year-old Marreo Mitchell was stabbed during an altercation with two other inmates Saturday afternoon in a cell block.  The department says two inmates are being detained as suspects.  Mitchell was serving a 20-year sentence after being convicted for distribution of a controlled substance in 2010 in Montgomery County.
