Authorities Investigate Three Homicides

Police have made arrests in three murders from the weekend and have begun an investigation into another homicide.  Starting with an early morning shooting on Saturday, 25-year-old Jonathan Norman of Montgomery was charged with a fatal shooting in the 2200 block of Upper Wetumpka Road.  Police say Montgomery resident 25-year-old Shederick Brooks was killed in what is being described as a domestic incident.  Norman is being held under $75,000 bond.

A little later the same day police and fire medics were called to the 900 block of Rialto Drive where a man and woman had been shot.  The woman was pregnant.  She and the unborn child died from their injuries.  She has been identified as 25-year-old Lakoya Brown.  The unidentified man did not receive life-threatening injuries.  According to police, 25-year-old Raymond Woods of Marion faces two counts of capital murder and one count of attempted murder in the incident, which is said to have stemmed from a verbal altercation among family members.

Chapman Investigation

A shooting that occurred Sunday is now being investigated as a homicide.  Police say 75-year-old James Chapman of Montgomery was found shot to death in the 4600 block of Rosa Parks Avenue.  No other information is available on the incident.  No arrests have been made.  Any individual that may have information on the shooting is asked to call police at 652-2831 or the Secret Witness Line which is 262-4000 or CrimeStoppers at 215-STOP.

State Settlement

Alabama is ending its effort to cut off Medicaid funds to Planned Parenthood clinics after losing in federal court.  Lawyers for the state and Planned Parenthood Southeast submitted a settlement agreement Monday to a federal judge.  In the agreement, the state says Planned Parenthood Southeast has been reinstated as a Medicaid provider.  Planned Parenthood took Alabama to court after Republican Governor Robert Bentley cut off Medicaid funds to the organization in the wake of undercover videos that anti-abortion activists say show the group's personnel negotiating the sale of fetal organs.  The Alabama clinics do not participate in the donation program.

NPR and WVAS-FM

National Public Radio's weekend host of "All Things Considered" will visit Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m.  Michel Martin will be moderator of a live stage event to discuss the 60th Anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.  Martin says there is very little difference in activism today and 60 years ago.  Tuesday night's event at the Dexter Avenue Church is part of national touring series, NPR presents Michel Martin: "Going There."
