Possible New Trial

A judge in east Alabama is considering whether to grant a new trial to a woman serving life without parole in the running death of her 9-year-old granddaughter.  50-year-old Joyce Garrard of Boaz want the judge to through out her capital murder conviction, claiming her trial including numerous mistakes, including the judge wrongfully preventing her defense attorneys from presenting their theory about what led to Savannah Hardin's death in February 2012.  Etowah County prosecutors say Garrard made the girl run until she collapsed as punishment for lying.

Mailing Narcotics

Federal prosecutors in Birmingham say the former executive of two nonprofit health clinics, including a facility in Tuskegee, has been sentenced for sending narcotics through the mail.  48-year-old Terri Mollica was sentenced Thursday to 28 months in prison on a charge of using U.S. mail to distribute a controlled substance.  In April, Mollica pleaded guilty to using her position at the health clinics to defraud the federal government.  Authorities say she illegally received around $1.7 million dollars in the scheme.
