Motorcycle Rider Dies in Early Morning Crash

Montgomery police say a motorcycle rider was killed in a two-vehicle crash early Monday morning.  According to Police Sgt. Denise Barnes, officers and Firemedics responded about 12:45 a.m. in the Troy Highway, Virginia Loop Road area.  Sgt. Barnes said the crash resulted in a single fatality.  Authorities say 32-year-old Micah Chappell of Montgomery was pronounced dead at the scene.  

Walking Classroom

College students from more than two dozens states continue their trek to Montgomery as part of a first-ever Walking Classroom to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights March.  The trek, sponsored by the U.S. Park Service, started Saturday morning in Lowdnes County and will end at the state Capitol on Wednesday.  Alabama State University sophomore Lamar Butler tells WVAS that recreating history is more important than heading to the beach for spring break.  

Moore in Texas

Alabama's top judge, Roy Moore is visiting the Texas Capitol today that will be abuzz with talk of gay marriage as three groups hold competing events both for and against same-sex rights.  The Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice will be the keynote speaker at a rally this afternoon sponsored by Conservative Republicans of Texas.  The group claims backing from 100 plus elected Texas officials.  Also against gay marriage is the Coalition of African-American Pastors, which will hold a news conference at the Texas Capitol today.  

WVAS Awards

The WVAS radio staff received three awards Saturday night at the Alabama Broadcasters Association's Annual ABBY Awards Banquet in Birmingham.  WVAS received awards for Best Reporter, Scottie Hunter, in a medium market.  Senior News Correspondent Marcus Hyles was honored for Best Regularly Scheduled Newscast, also in a medium market and Production Technician Vydreon Moon was honored for Best Public Service Announcement.
