Freezing Weather Preparations

Alabama is likely headed for the deep freeze.  The National Weather Service says freezing temperatures and sub-freezing wind chills throughout the state will range between minus 5 and 7 degrees Thursday morning.  Art Faulkner, Alabama's Emergency Management Director, is urging residents to protect household property, pets and assist others, especially the elderly.  

Flu Season

Health officials say the flu is rampant in most of the country and could peak soon.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday reported flu was widespread in 43 states, including Alabama, and flu activity was intense in most of them.  Flu season started early this winter, as it has the last two years.  The CDC report issued Monday covers the week of Christmas.  

Selma Preview

Governor Robert Bentley today will attend a special preview screening of the movie "Selma."  Bentley will join state Tourism Director Lee Sentell and the manager of the Alabama Film Office, Kathy Faulk to watch the preview screening at a Montgomery theater.  The movie was filmed in Selma, Montgomery and Atlanta.  "Selma" has been showing in select cities and opens for nationwide release on Friday.  

No Cutbacks

Mayor Todd Strange says he will not make cutbacks to the Montgomery Area Transit System.  Strange said despite a $300,000 deficit at MATS, current bus routes and the number of buses will not be changed.  Strange made the comments Monday at a program sponsored by the Montgomery Transportation Coalition.  The mayor also said the city will add new buses and new routes this year.
