Montgomery Police say it was a 27-year-old man who was slain early Tuesday morning in the mid-town district. MPD said Nathan Dasher was fatally shot in the 25oo block of Highland Avenue. Officers responded to the shooting scene at about 1:15 a.m. where Dasher was pronounced dead. No arrests have been made and authorities have not disclosed the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting. It was the 12th homicide in Montgomery this year.
VA Records Manipulated
Republican Congresswoman Martha Roby is upset about revelations that veterans patient records were manipulated by a pulmonologist at the Central Alabama VA facility. The U.S. Office of Special Counsel sent a report to the White House that accused a physician of cutting and pasting notes from previous patient visits to make them look like current readings. Roby called it "egregious behavior." Roby said several employees on her staff are in Montgomery to interview veterans.
Gambling Survey
A recent Al.com reader survey on gambling found that an overwhelming number of respondents would support a referendum for a lottery in Alabama. Out of more than 4,700 that participated in the poll, 89 percent said they would vote for a lottery if it appeared on a ballot. Long-time commentator on Alabama politics, Dr. Brad Moody, says this apparent shift could be a reaction to the economy. He says the softening stance of some Republican leaders on a state lottery probably has more to do with not wanting to raise taxes than changing their minds about gambling.
NAACP VRAA
One year after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a key provision in the Voting Rights Act stemming from a lawsuit filed by an Alabama county. NAACP leaders from Alabama and other states will testify today before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee to urge Congress to approved a Voting Rights Amendment Act. The civil rights organization is seeking bipartisan support for legislation to prevent discrimination and an ability to review changes in state voting laws.
