Weather Service: Alabama tornado count put at 23

By Nealy two dozen twisters touch down in Ala. during April 27 outbreak

Montgomery, AL – The National Weather Service says
Alabama was struck by 23 tornadoes during last week's outbreak of
storms.
The weather service says the 23 tornadoes were among 362 to
touch down nationwide when the storms hit, including a
record-setting 312 in 24 hours.
Alabama's Emergency Management Agency reported earlier that the
storms killed 250 people in the state and said Monday the figure
was 236. It said Tuesday morning that it's going over the toll
county-by-county and is revising its figures.
Officials say an EF-5 tornado that cut through Alabama and
Tennessee killed 26 people, and an EF-4 tornado that swung through
Greene, Tuscaloosa and Jefferson counties killed 65.
Birmingham Mayor William Bell says the cost of removing debris
in the city of Birmingham could run as high as $10 million.
