By Ala House panel OKS ban on payroll deductions
Montgomery, AL – The governor's legislation ending state
payroll deductions for the Alabama Education Association and the
Alabama State Employees Association is getting closer to being
approved by the Legislature.
The bill cleared the Senate on Friday and won approval in the
House Ethics Committee on Monday. It goes to the House of
Representatives for consideration Tuesday.
The bill would end the state government's long-standing practice
of taking payroll deductions for membership dues and political
contributions for AEA and ASEA. The bill's sponsor, Republican Sen.
Del Marsh of Anniston, said taxpayers' money shouldn't be used to
conduct payroll deductions for organizations that engage in
political activity. Opponents say the bill is designed to weaken
the two organizations.
The House committee also approved the governor's bill giving
subpoena power to the Ethics Commission.
