Alabama tops nation in gains on rigorous AP tests

By Ala high schoolers make biggest gains on college prep courses

Montgomery, AL – - State leaders say Alabama had the
biggest percentage increase of any state in the number of high
school students passing tests for rigorous Advanced Placement
courses.
The national average went up 8.3 percent from 2009 to 2010, but
Alabama's rate rose 17.7 percent.
Gov. Bob Riley and state School Superintendent Joe Morton say
Alabama has experienced a dramatic increase in the number of
students taking AP courses. Only about half of Alabama's high
school students had the opportunity to take AP courses in 2007.
Now, students in all high schools have access to them through
teachers in the classroom or through distance learning programs.
Greg Fleisher of the National Math and Science Initiative says
Alabama has become a leader in making sure all students have access
to AP courses.
