Hundreds to repeat the third grade

Some 18-hundred eight-and-nine-year-olds in Alabama will repeat the third grade.

That's due to a high-stakes requirement of the 2019 Alabama Literacy Act that takes effect this year.

It requires third graders to meet reading benchmarks before moving on to fourth grade.

State Superintendent Eric Mackey made the announcement on Thursday. He said the numbers are preliminary, and schools will report their final numbers next month.
