By State has more EF-5 twisters than any other state
Huntsville, Ala – Federal weather officials say Alabama
now tops the list for the most top-category tornadoes since 1950.
The National Weather Service has upgraded an April 27 tornado in
DeKalb County from EF-4 to an EF-5 category to give the state seven
EF-5 tornadoes since 1950. That's when the Weather Service began
keeping such records.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Storm
Prediction Center says Alabama had been tied with Texas, Oklahoma,
Iowa and Kansas with six EF-5 tornadoes.
An EF-5 tornado struck the Rainsville and Sylvania area and
another touched down in the Hackleburg and Phil Campbell area on
April 27.
An EF-5 tornado, which is the most powerful on the Enhanced Fuji
scale, has winds of more than 200 mph.
