By U.S. attorney in Montgomery to retire, replacement awaits approval
Montgomery, AL – The U.S. attorney for the Middle
District of Alabama, Leura Canary, has announced that she is
retiring Friday.
She was appointed by President George W. Bush to be the U.S.
attorney in Montgomery in 2001. Canary remained as U.S. attorney
into President Obama's administration. Prior to being U.S.
attorney, she served with the Justice Department as a trial
attorney and assistant U.S. attorney.
A veteran of the Montgomery office, Louis Franklin, will serve
as acting U.S. attorney following her retirement. The president has
nominated Montgomery attorney George Beck to be U.S. attorney, and
he is awaiting approval by the U.S. Senate.
