Mississippi John Hurt Homecoming Festival and Symposium 2024

A Homecoming Festival and Symposium dedicated to the life and legacy of Mississippi John Hurt will be held October 5-6 at the site of the former Hurt Museum which burned to the ground on February 21, 2024. The site is located at 1973 CR 109, Carrollton MS. The festival will include a Museum Ashes Memorial and Memorial Walk led by Mary Frances Hurt, granddaughter of Mississippi John Hurt, Blues Trail Marker Installation Ceremony, documentary film screening, art therapy with Jackson MS quilter Ravin Lovett, guitar workshop with Blues educator Tj Wheeler, roundtable discussions with African American historians Brian Mitchell and Tara White, Open Mic time, and live music featuring a host of outstanding Blues artists. Sponsors include the Mississippi Arts Council, the Mississippi Humanities Council, Visit Mississippi, the New Hampshire State Arts Council, the Mt. Zion Memorial Fund, the Mississippi John Hurt Foundation, and Prairie View A&M University. The festival is free and open to the public.
