Accreditation status for Montgomery Public Schools changed to "under review"

May 31, 2018

The accrediting body AdvanED made its presentation to the Montgomery County Board of Education yesterday as it revealed to the board that the system’s status has been changed to “under review.” A six-member team has been reviewing the Montgomery County Public School System for several months as well as compiling the report presented yesterday. In that report it is revealed that 31 performance standards were measured in 3 categories. Those categories are Leadership Capacity, Learning Capacity and Resource Capacity. Looking at the performance standards Montgomery Public Schools received “Needs Improvement” in 19 areas, “Emerging” in 11 areas and “Meets Expectations” in one area.

The AdvancED representative making the presentation said that MPS is still accredited, but it falls in the middle range of ratings. The three possible results are full accreditation, under review, or loss of accreditation. The accrediting team included in the report suggested corrections for the school system to make to maintain its accreditation. The representative of AdvancED says MPS must show progress by the time a monitoring review team returns to Montgomery in December.
