Trainer jet plant will not be built in Macon County

   Macon County will not be the site of a new training aircraft plant after all. The Air Force yesterday announced that it had chosen the Boeing Company for the contract to build the next generation of jet trainer. Italian Company Leonardo DRS was among the finalists for the contract and it had chosen Moton Field in Tuskegee for its manufacturing site. The plant would have created 750 immediate jobs and another 4-thousand at suppliers in Central Alabama.

   A lawsuit has been filed against Alabama's secretary of state for blocking people on Twitter. The lawsuit was filed Wednesday by three people who said Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill had blocked them from his Twitter account "because of opinions they expressed or questions they asked." American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama Director Randall Marshall said Merrill largely posts about the activities of his public office and blocking people deprives them of that information. The lawsuit argues it is a First Amendment violation to put a "viewpoint-based restriction" on access.

Montgomery's annual Diversity Summit is coming up

   Preparations are underway for this year’s annual Diversity Summit in Montgomery. The event is set for October 2nd and 3rd at the Renaissance Montgomery Convention Center with the theme of “The Future: Diversity. Talent. Innovation.” Meg Lewis with the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce says the summit is popular with companies of all sizes. 

Montgomery Board of Education passes budget

   It was a concerned Montgomery County Board of Education that passed a deficit budget last night. The 231 million dollar spending plan for 2019 passed by a vote of 5 to 2. Even those voting for the budget bemoaned it’s 9.7 million dollar deficit. Board member Arika Watkins Smith said new revenue is needed. The 2018 budget would have also operated at a deficit if not for the sale of Georgia Washington Middle School to Pike Road.

November 19,2008 – Montgomery resident, Brent Springford, Jr. , has plead guilty in the beating deaths of his. Springford was charged in the Thanksgiving 2004 murders of his parents, Winston and Charlotte Springford, both 62. Even though Springford plead guilty to five counts of capital murder in the case, he must still stand trial on December 3rd.

November 18,2008 – It's cold and Flu season, and public health officials are encouraging residents to take precautions and get their Flu shots. The Alabama Department of Public Health reports on average, 226,000 people are hospitalized each year nationwide because of Influenza.

November 17,2008 – Alabama Senator Richard Shelby plans to fight a Democratic proposal to bail out U. S. automakers to the tune of 25 BILLION dollars. Shelby, who is the ranking Republican on the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, says such a bailout would only postpone the inevitable.

November 14,2008 – Alabama congressman Artur Davis is up in arms over a panel formed by the Alabama Democratic Party to recommend federal appointees for President- elect Barack Obama. Davis says the panel has no legitimacy, but party officials disagree.

November 13,2008 – Consumers are enjoying lower gas prices with regular unleaded gasoline at its lowest amounts around the state since 2006. AAA Alabama is offering tips to get the best mileage possible.

November 12,2008 – Alabama Congressman Artur Davis says the rumors are just that, rumors, and he is not considering serving as U.S. Attorney General. Davis says he will announce early next year definitive plans on whether he will run for Governor of Alabama. On another note, Davis will participate in an upcoming Time magazine panel discussion this weekend about the publication's "Person of the Year".

November 11,2008 – Alabama Congressman Artur Davis tells WVAS news he will have an announcement to make early next year. That response when we questioned Davis about reported plans to run for Governor. Selma based Zeigler is recalling its more than 28,000 pounds of hot dogs fearing contamination. Zeigler officials say the hot dogs produced on September 22nd may be contaminated with a bacteria that can cause a potentially deadly disease called Listeriosis.

November 7,2008 – Stories making Headlines this hour in the WVAS Newsroom: President Elect Barack Obama prepares to speak to the nation via his first news conference since Tuesday. WVAS news will carry his comments live beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Montgomery Police Officer injured in a robbery shooting Wednesday remains in stable condition this morning. Meanwhile, three of the suspects in the robbery are charged with murder in connection with the death of a fellow robbery suspect.

November 6,2008 – From the WVAS Newsroom, our top story this hour: A Montgomery Police Officer is hospitalized in stable condition following a shooting overnight in North Montgomery. Police were called to a home on North Pass Road with reports of a home invasion robbery around 7:30 last night. Shots were fired, and reportedly three people were injured, with an unidentified Montgomery Police Officer listed in stable condition at a local hospital.
