Montgomery, Alabama – (AP) - A summary of action in the Alabama
Legislature on Wednesday, a committee meeting day:
COMMITEES
-Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill that would prohibit
a judge from imposing a death sentence in a capital murder case if
the jury recommended life in prison without parole. Goes to Senate.
-Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill to provide a 180-day
moratorium on foreclosures on some types of home loans. Goes to

Unemployment Compensation Checks Increase

Montgomery, Alabama – There is a little good news for the unemployed in Alabama. Because of the federal economic stimulus package, unemployment compensation checks will include an additional $25 beginning by the end of this month.

About70,000 Alabamians could receive the extra money in their unemployment compensation checks.

An Alabama Prison Named in a Class Action Lawsuit

Birmingham, Alabama – (AP) - A human rights group has filed suit
alleging there's rampant violence, overcrowding and inhumane
conditions at Alabama's Donaldson prison near Birmingham.
The Southern Center for Human Rights filed the federal
class-action lawsuit Thursday claiming Donaldson prison is so
overcrowded that three inmates are crammed into cells measuring
only 8 by 12 feet.
The suit says the roof leaks and the prison smells of human
