Karen Brown

News Reporter II

News reporter Karen Brown is a native Montgomerian and 1994 Alabama State University graduate. This is her second stint at WVAS, having worked at the station from 1995 to 1999 as a part-time reporter and producer of the morning talk show “Open Mic.”

In addition to her reporting duties, Brown produces the weekly public affairs program, “90.7 Perspectives” which has won two Alabama Broadcasting Association Best in Broadcasting Awards for Best Medium Market Radio Talk show. In 2011, she was named by the Alabama Associated Press as the Best Radio reporter in the state. Her favorite work related task is covering Capitol news. However, when Brown is not at work, she likes to read, study her Bible, ride motorcycles and sleep.

Bears Stuffing Themselves Near Massachusetts Homes

The mild New England winter means that more bears are up and about, looking for food — and not just in the woods. They're also exploring urban backyards and residential streets. The small town of Northampton, Mass., has more than its share of furry visitors.

In Northampton, a call on a neighborhood email list for tales of recent bear encounters netted about about a dozen responses in an hour. Almost everyone, it seems, has a bear story.
